I have always wanted to know exactly how well the various Virus programs actually work.

You can look up so called comparison sites but to date all of these have an agenda. That is to say they want to sell you a virus program, in some cases they don’t care which one, but usually have a favourite, the one that gives them the most profit per sale and or the most $$ in the way of annual renewal commissions.

Anyway, finally there is a reputable company doing true testing (AV Test) and reporting on a large number of these Virus Program Manufacturers.
These tests have now been run for the last 2 years, with some surprising and some disappointing manufacturers.

Have read, a bit technical, but if you are interested in getting a better security software program this makes good reading and there is pictures too, that put it all into simple perspective.
